Premier League: Newcastle can maintain fine form form against inconsistent West Ham

Newcastle finally have lift-off. The Magpies have won three games in a row for the first time since November 2018, beating Leeds United, Everton and Aston Villa to open up a four-point lead above the bottom three. Eddie Howe's methods are beginning to work and Newcastle's January business has already paid dividends.
They are not out of the woods just yet, but Newcastle will arrive at the London Stadium on Saturday with renewed confidence. West Ham United have stumbled in their pursuit of a top-four finish; they may have rescued a point at Leicester City last time out, but David Moyes’ men have now won just one of their last four Premier League encounters.
The Hammers have also become increasingly reliant on Jarrod Bowen for goals. If Newcastle can keep the former Hull City forward quiet, they could pick up a result here. Instead of an away win, though, back Newcastle or draw in the double chance market at 2.2.
Expect a tight game at the London Stadium
The main reason for Newcastle’s recent uptick is their new-found defensive solidity. No one will be mistaking this team for the Chelsea of 2004/05, but the Magpies have noticeably improved at the back of late. They have conceded only one goal in their last three outings (and that was an own goal), and three in their last five league encounters.
That bodes well for Newcastle’s survival prospects. Previously, they simply were not scoring enough goals to make up for a leaky backline. Now that clean sheets have become a realistic prospect again, things are beginning to look up at St James’ Park.
West Ham’s last home game was a 1-0 victory over Watford, and although they were worthy winners the Hornets did a decent job of containing their attack. Newcastle could do the same on Saturday, so consider under 2.5 goals at 2.06.

Saint-Maximin one to watch in scoring stakes
Allan Saint-Maximin is Newcastle’s dangerman. Even when he does not score or provide an assist, he is a constant threat with his speed, trickery and direct running. The Frenchman is arguably the most thrilling player in the Premier League on his day, and his refined end product makes him an even greater threat in the final third.
Saint-Maximin has not scored in Newcastle’s recent winning run, but he did find the back of the net in their two previous league games against Watford and Manchester United. He regularly gets into scoring positions and has come close to making the net ripple in recent fixtures.
At 5.2, he looks like excellent value to score anytime this weekend. His pace will cause West Ham no end of problems, with Newcastle set to funnel their counter-attacks through Saint-Maximin.
