Champions League Tuesday tips: why Saints demolition gives Chelsea hope in Madrid

The identities of two of the Champions League semi-finalists will become clear on Tuesday night, when the first two quarter-finals are completed.

Real Madrid are on the brink of a last-four place after leaving Stamford Bridge with a 3-1 win while Bayern Munich must overcome a tactically-astute Unai Emery side who take a one-goal advantage to the Allianz Arena.

Real Madrid vs Chelsea

8pm, BT Sport 2

Real were ruthless in the first leg as Karim Benzema demolished the Blues with a hat-trick to put his side within touching distance of the semi-finals. They followed that up with a 2-0 home win over Getafe as they reclaimed a 12-point advantage at the top of La Liga.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are at 1.06 to qualify for the last four with both teams to score at 1.7, while Benzema is at 2.22 to score anytime.

Chelsea drubbed Southampton 6-0 last time out at St Mary’s with manager Thomas Tuchel praising the players’ commitment, hunger and quality.

It was a complete contrast to the previous two games against Real and Brentford in the Premier League during which they conceded seven goals and appeared on the brink of self-sabotage.

Tuchel understands the magnitude of turning around a 3-1 deficit at the Bernabeu but the nature of Saturday’s win offered some cause for optimism. Chelsea are at 3 to win on the night, and 7.6 to qualify. Kai Havertz is 3.15 to score anytime, and add to his two goals in as many games.

Recommended bet: Benzema anytime @ 2.22

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has 19 goals in his last 23 games

Bayern Munich vs Villarreal

8pm, BT Sport 3

The six-time champions go into the match at the Allianz Arena one goal behind after they were caught out at La Ceramica.

Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the game and Bayern were relieved the deficit is not even greater after the Yellow Submarine missed a host of chances.

It was the German side’s first away defeat in the Champions League since 2017 and they were out of sorts all evening.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side claimed their third straight league win on Saturday with a late Robert Lewandowski penalty securing an unconvincing victory over Augsburg. But they will be confident of overturning the deficit, and are at 1.6 to qualify in normal time.

Unai Emery’s team will present tough opposition though and Bayern to qualify in extra time is at 7.2. Lewandowski has scored 19 in 23 games and he is at 1.36 to score anytime.

The La Liga side were superb last week with Emery’s tactics spot on as they stifled their opponents, but it may well be a different proposition on Tuesday though at the Allianz Arena where the hosts have scored 17 goals in their last five games, and 20 in their last four European matches.

Villarreal's league form is not a real indicator of their ability with them lying in seventh and without a win in three games. Instead, they have been able to nullify more illustrious opposition and a draw would see them through to the last four and that is 6.6. The Spanish side are 3.25 to qualify, and 12.5 to claim another shock win in 90 minutes.

Recommended bet: both teams to score @ 1.7

Recommended bets

Benzema anytime @ 2.22

Bayern/Villarreal BTTS @ 1.7

Bayern qualify extra-time @ 7.2
