Glorious Goodwood: three selections for Wednesday's card at the Sussex festival

3.00 Goodwood, 5f Market Molecomb Stakes

Eddie’s Boy has twice finished behind Rocket Rodney. Firstly, when third in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, before finishing a luckless third in the Dragon Stakes at Sandown.

I felt on both occasions that the stiff nature of those tracks was not to Eddie’s Boy's liking and tipped him to show improved form in the Super Sprint at Newbury where the flat track would place less emphasis on stamina; he duly took his form to another level, when he broke smartly and showed blistering speed to make all.

This track also places far more emphasis on speed than stamina, so I’m staggered at the disparity in the prices and think that Archie Watson’s speedy colt is a great bet to make it third time lucky.

Selection: Eddie’s Boy @ 7

4.10 Goodwood, 1m1f197y EBF Fillies Handicap

Rousay looked to appreciate the step up to ten furlongs last time at Salisbury, running on well into second after a stumble three-furlongs out meant she went from travelling sweetly to coming off the bridle.

Her inexperienced apprentice jockey found balancing her somewhat difficult in the closing stages and as a result wasn’t able to ride her out to best effect. But with Hollie Doyle now taking over in the saddle it’s safe to assume strong assistance from the saddle will be forthcoming.

The Richard Hannon-trained filly already boasts a nice piece of course form, when finishing third over a mile in May. She stuck doggedly to her task on that occasion to finish two lengths behind Lawful Command who is now rated 91 and just half a length behind Spinaround who has since climbed to a rating of 94. Rousay will race here off just 82 and is capable of gaining just her second career victory.

Selection: Rousay @ 8.6

4.45 Goodwood, 5f Alice Keppel Fillies Conditions Stakes

The Platinum Queen found the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot a step too far but still acquitted herself well, finishing in mid-division despite jumping slowly from the stalls.

She bounced back to winning ways in taking style at York last time, breaking smartly and making the running before quickening clear to win by an easy four lengths from the 92-rated Yahsat.

A repeat of that will be more than enough to bag this prize; in fact, the conditions of the race mean that on official figures she has upwards of 12lb in hand of her rivals.

Goodwood can often throw up a hard-luck story, which usually heightens my reluctance to back and tip short-priced runners, but on this occasion her ability to make the running means she can avoid trouble in-running. At currently odds-against she’s an excellent bet as she could well go off as an odds-on shot.

Selection: The Platinum Queen @ 2.34
