The first midweek Premier League slate is upon us this year as eight teams are scheduled to play Tuesday - Greg Lea has provided his pick and prediction for each match-up.

Arsenal v Newcastle United

Kick-off: 7.45pm Tuesday

Arsenal marched on with another win on New Year’s Eve and have now opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the table after Manchester City and Newcastle both failed to secure all three points.

Their 4-2 victory over Brighton means the Gunners have dropped points in just two of their first 16 fixtures this term - a record that has allowed their fans to dream of a first title since 2004.

Newcastle were frustrated by Leeds United in a 0-0 draw at the weekend, but they have taken 19 points from the last 21 available – an identical record to Arsenal over the same period. Expect a tight match when the division’s two best defences meet at the Emirates Stadium.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals @ 2.12

Everton v Brighton & Hove Albion

Kick-off: 7.45pm Tuesday

Everton showed considerable grit and resolve to hold Manchester City to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. It was a much-needed result for Frank Lampard, who was criticised after his team’s 2-1 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day. The Everton boss will hope that the point at the Etihad Stadium kick-starts a positive run of form that will pull the Toffees away from the drop zone.

Brighton will try to bounce back after their aforementioned loss to Arsenal. Only the Gunners and Leicester City have scored more goals away from home than the Seagulls, who should find the net at Goodison Park. Meanwhile, Everton’s renewed confidence and the return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin should help them put at least one past Robert Sanchez.

Prediction: Both teams to score @ 1.85

Leicester City v Fulham

Kick-off: 7.45pm Tuesday

Fulham continued their fantastic form in the first half of the season with back-to-back victories over the festive period, a 3-0 success over Crystal Palace on Boxing Day was followed by a 2-1 win against Southampton at the weekend. The Cottagers are just a handful of wins away from securing their top-flight status ahead of schedule.

Leicester have found things much tougher so far this term. They had a few bright moments in their 2-1 defeat by Liverpool on Friday, but the Foxes’ defensive deficiencies once again proved costly. Aleksandar Mitrovic missed a penalty against Southampton, but I fancy his chances of bouncing back with a midweek goal.

Prediction: Aleksandar Mitrovic to score anytime @ 2.6

Manchester United v Bournemouth

Kick-off: 7.45pm Tuesday

Manchester United are beginning to motor under Erik ten Hag and have now won five games on the bounce in all competitions. With the Manchester derby on the horizon after two cup clashes, the Red Devils could do with picking up another three points when Bournemouth visit Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The Cherries have lost back-to-back games since the return from World Cup 2022. Crystal Palace brushed them aside in a 2-0 win on New Year’s Eve, which left Gary O’Neil’s squad just three points above the bottom three. After failing to score in their last three outings, Bournemouth could draw another blank here.

Prediction: Manchester United to win to nil @ 1.99
