Andy Schooler previews Saturday’s Wimbledon ladies’ final and brings you his best bets for Barbora Krejcikova v Jasmine Paolini.

How to split Saturday’s Wimbledon ladies’ singles finalists?

Well, they are both 28.

Both have only lost two sets en route to the final.

Both had to come from behind to win their semi-finals.

In terms of game style, both are very capable of mixing things up and it was that ability to try different things that helped the pair turn around those thrilling matches on Thursday.

One big difference comes when you look at their head-to-head.

Krejcikova won their only previous meeting for the loss of only three games.

A notable advantage? I’m not convinced.

That match came more than six years ago, long before either player made their breakthrough – both were ranked outside the top 100 at the time.

Asked about the match after her SF win, Krejcikova said she couldn’t even remember it.

I’d expect experience to be a more important factor.

This has been a breakout season for Paolini but although she did make her maiden Grand Slam final at last month’s French Open, she is yet to win at this level.

Krejcikova, on the other hand, has won a Slam before – the 2021 French Open – while she’s also got the experience of having won the Wimbledon doubles on the very court she’ll be competing at on Saturday.

The Czech – chalked up as the 1.74 favourite – certainly seems relaxed right now.

She admitted after her SF win that she was “enjoying the moment much more than I did in Paris (in 2021)”.

In contrast, Paolini seemed a little too honest when saying “I’m going to be shaking (with nerves)” come match time.

She certainly appeared to struggle with dealing with the occasion in Paris when she was dispatched comfortably by Iga Swiatek, although that is hardly a disgrace given how the Pole has often played at Roland Garros.

But she was also very much second best in the early part of her semi-final here against Donna Vekic who, like Madison Keys in the last 16, rather let her off the hook.

Another slow start here would be more difficult to turn around, one suspects, especially given how Krejcikova has been serving in the past couple of rounds.

The Czech looks the right favourite to me but that mentality factor points me in the direction of a value way of backing her.

As outlined, it could well be a nervy start from the Italian and so I like the look of Krejcikova claiming the first set.

She’s 1.75 to do so but to boost the price to odds-against, let’s venture into the first-set handicap market.

In that, Krejcikova is giving up 1.5 games.

That basically eliminates tie-break success but includes all the other scores, yet we get a considerably bigger price – 2.04.
