Andy Schooler picks through a chaotic Wimbledon ladies’ singles market in a bid to find the winner – and is backing two at three-figure prices.
The recent tournament in Berlin has really thrown a spanner in the works when it comes to the Wimbledon ladies’ singles market.
What was supposed to be the big litmus test for the Grand Slam event in London simply became survival of the fittest with a host of the top players suffering injuries or illness.
Aryna Sabalenka remains the ante-post favourite despite quitting her quarter-final with a shoulder problem, while Elena Rybakina – the 2022 Wimbledon champion, who is currently third in the market – left citing an abdominal strain.
It’s hard to know exactly how either player is at this stage – even if they were struggling, the chance of them saying so publicly would be slim – but it’s clearly risky backing them right now.
Both rely heavily on their serves and those are the sort of injuries which will have an effect on that shot.
Reigning Wimbledon queen Marketa Vondrousova was another to leave Berlin injured – she had a hip issue – while Ons Jabeur departed through illness.
That’s rather less worrying – a week and a half to recover should be fine – and so the player who has reached the last two Wimbledon finals is worth considering at 17.
She played well at the recent French Open, bowing out in the quarter-finals, but I feel her variety-filled game is more suited to grass where she can come to the net to volley, pull her opponent forward (and out of their comfort zone) with drop shots but also take them on with her baseline power.
Her performances in those two finals are, admittedly, a tad concerning as she looked wracked with nerves on both occasions but this is a player who has won big titles on the WTA Tour and she deserves another chance.
I’ve got this far without mentioning world number one Iga Swiatek but, for me, she’s a lay at this event.
The Pole’s game, ideal for clay, simply isn’t as well suited to the slicker grass and that’s shown by the fact she’s yet to go beyond the quarter-finals at the All England Club.
Perhaps she’ll be able to take advantage of the injury issues surrounding some of her title rivals but it’s worth noting her losses here haven’t come against superstars.
Viktorija Golubic, Jabeur, Alize Cornet and, last year, Elina Svitolina have been her conquerors at Wimbledon. Three have been unseeded and the other (Jabeur) was only the 21st seed.
Given all the concerns surrounding the market leaders, it makes sense to look at some bigger prices.
Madison Keys enjoyed a fine clay court season and last year made the semis here. Her huge-hitting game will always have potential in SW19 but odds of 29 feel a little short – she’s gone off a lot bigger in the past.
Instead, consider Karolina Pliskova and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Pliskova made the final three years ago with her big serve and while she’s dropped away from the game’s elite, she recently made the final in Nottingham, beating Jabeur along the way.
If there’s one player in the field capable of finding that groove on the grass, then it’s arguably Pliskova.
As for Haddad Maia, she’s also got good history on this surface, winning 13 matches on it in 2022.
Last season she made the last 16 at Wimbledon, only bowing out when a hip injury got the better of her.
Form hasn’t been great in 2024 but a return to favoured surrounding may mean her odds look big come the middle weekend.
Recommended bets:
Back Ons Jabeur @ 17
Lay Iga Swiatek @ 5.1
