Rocket Mortgage Classic tips: Cantlay due to motor in Detroit but watch out for Tom Kim

Detroit is Motor City and with the FedEx Cup Playoffs looming, it's time to step on the gas.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic clashes with the LIV Golf event at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, but 11 of the world's top 50 and 28 of the top 100 will still be in action at Detroit Golf Club.

World number four Patrick Cantlay is the only member of the world's top 10 in action but despite his short odds (13), he's our tip to win for the first time since he outgunned Bryson DeChambeau in that marathon playoff for the BMW Championship last season.

Cantlay would go on to win the FedEx Cup and while he's failed to win in 2022, his record of eight top-10s from 15 starts shows he's likely to be in contention on an old school course reminiscent of East Lake, Caves Valley, Muirfield Village, and Sherwood Country Club, where where he won last year.

Many will be hoping Will Zalatoris (18) can grab his first PGA TOUR win this week but at a venue where putting inside 10 feet has been richly rewarded in the past, we see Cantlay (No. 1 on the PGA TOUR this year) trumping 180th-ranked Zalatoris on the greens.

World number four Cantlay expected to impress

Young confident

It would be expecting a lot from Tony Finau, our top pick last week, to win two weeks running so we'd look to world number 19 Cameron Young (21) to back up his runner-up finish in The Open with another big finish.

Like Cantlay, Young is making his debut in Detroit and while he's not a great putter inside 10 feet, his confidence levels are so high following two runner-ups and two thirds in his last seven starts, we're backing him to remain on that wave.

While Kevin Kisner (30) has finished third and eighth in his last two trips to Detroit, we see world number 50 Cameron Tringale as one to watch this week.

Tringale's record at Detroit Country Club is even better - tied fifth, tied 30th, tied 14th in his three visits since 2019 with a scoring average of 68.50.

While he missed the cut in the 3M Classic last week, he's still the world No 50 and he's surely due to end his long wait for that first PGA TOUR win.

Take "Tom"

Our final pick goes to Joohyung "Tom" Kim who only made the field on a sponsor's invitation after Wesley Bryan got into the tournament on his category.

Kim is already ranked 39th in the world and with six wins in Asia, he's not afraid to win. He was 23rd in the US Open and third in the Genesis Invitational at the Renaissance Club and while his pace of play can be exasperating, there is no doubt about the quality of his game.
