EFL Saturday Tips: why surprise package Luton can continue winning run

With the end of the season fast approaching, the EFL is as exciting as ever with little yet decided at the top or bottom of any division. Here’s a selection of our best bets.

Luton v Blackpool

Saturday 23 April, 12:30pm, Sky Sports Main Event

Nathan Jones would surely be a worthy contender for Manager of the Year if he was to lead the Hatters to the Premier League, eight years after Luton returned to the Football League. They are at 1.92 to make it three straight wins with 11-goal Harry Cornick at 2.92 to score anytime.

The Tangerines start the match in 16^th after demolishing Birmingham 6-1 last time out to end a five-match winless run. Before that goals had been hard to come by but Luton to win/both teams to score is at 4.1. Jake Beesley scored twice against Blues on his third Championship appearance and he is at 4.5 to strike again.

Peterborough v Nottingham Forest

Saturday 23 April, 3:00pm

The equation is simple: Peterborough must better Reading’s result at Hull to live to fight another day. A four-game unbeaten run has given them a slim chance with two clinical finishes guiding them to victory at Barnsley. The Yorkshire side created several chances at Oakwell though and the hosts meet far more ruthless opposition on Saturday. Jack Marriott has scored two in as many games and is at 3.3 to score anytime. Posh to win is at 5.5 with a draw at 3.95.

Forest bounced back from defeat at Luton to thrash West Brom and make it six wins in seven outings. Steve Cooper’s side are at 1.66 for the win. Blessed with attacking options, they had four different scorers against the Baggies as they made light of the absence of Keinan Davis. Brennan Johnson is at 2.28 to score anytime and add to his 14 league goals. Ruthless in attack and miserly in defence, Forest are at 2.46 to keep a clean sheet.

Sheffield United v Cardiff

Saturday 23 April, 3:00pm

The Blades have won just once in five games and remain in the play-off spots because of the poor form of others around them. They have been riven by injuries, most notably to the forward line, with Oli McBurnie the latest to be ruled out with a foot injury. Billy Sharp has missed five games – in which the team have scored twice – and he may be back for Saturday. If not, the onus will fall on Morgan Gibbs-White and Iliman Ndiaye. United are at 1.62 for the win with Gibbs-White at 3.15 to score anytime.

The Bluebirds have lost three of the last four although the scoreline has not always reflected their performance. After flirting with a potential relegation battle, they have pulled away from the drop zone under Steve Morison and could be awkward opponents for the hosts. They are at 6.6 for the win with a draw at 3.85.

Wycombe Wanderers v Sheffield Wednesday

Saturday 23 April, 3:00pm

Two of last season’s relegated sides meet at Adams Park with both seeking an immediate return to the Championship. The Chairboys are unbeaten in 10 games and start in sixth, on the same points as Sunderland but with a better goal difference by one. They have snuck in under the radar and have not even conceded a home goal in five games. They are at 2.7 for the win.

The Owls are unbeaten in eight and, with a game in hand, have an eye on automatic promotion. They ground out victory against Crewe last time out and are at 2.5 to win with a draw at 3.3.  Both teams to score is at 1.7.

Stevenage v Tranmere Rovers

Saturday 23 April, 3:00pm

Stevenage have discovered their best form of the season right when it matters and stand four points above second-bottom Oldham who are on the brink of joining Scunthorpe out of the Football League. They are at 2.38 for the win with a draw at 2.78.

Tranmere, though, are also desperate for points in their play-off bid after victory over Exeter last time out arrested a five-game winless slide. Rovers have not won on their travels since 22 January although they won the reverse game earlier this season and they are at 2.92 to win.
